Gorion knows what is going on but will not tell the player character, and instead decides to leave Candlekeep and journey with the player character to a hiding place. However, the night after leaving Candlekeep they are ambushed by a group of bandits led by a mysterious "armored figure". When Gorion refuses to hand over the player character, he is attacked by the bandits; Gorion defeats them but dies in doing so. The player character soon runs into Imoen, who had been following in secret after reading a note about the journey on Gorion's desk. She too saw Gorion's murder, and now insists on accompanying the character.

You'll be doing a lot of manual rolls, too, like when you're trying to pick a lock, disarm a trap, or just in conversation. The skills you get when you select your class and background constantly crop up, emphasising your earliest choices and encouraging you to roleplay. Sometimes you'll get unique dialogue options that don't require any rolls—as a Bard I often get to crack jokes or spit out the occasional bit of poetry—but when I try to persuade or deceive someone, the dice come out.

RNG can be a bit of a pain in the arse, true, but Baldur's Gate 3 sidesteps some of the pitfalls inherent in systems that employ so much randomness by giving you plenty of ways to augment your rolls. Spells, potions and proficiency bonuses can be applied to bump the number up, with your companions lending a hand too.

In tabletop Dungeons and Dragons, characters can make reaction moves to interrupt an enemy attack. These are represented in Baldur’s Gate 3 by a condition you set on each character.

Many fans found this an odd approach, and so Larian has re-written the narrator with a more traditional present-tense voice. Now, the narration and your dialogue options make it feel as if it is you making the decisions.

Throughout your journey, you will meet countless NPCs, each with different beliefs, alignments, and their own story to tell. Complete quests, reach key story turning points, and finish each story arc to make your mark on the world. Everything you do will eventually make its way back to the city of Baldur's Gate.

You will have several set modifiers that will be added to your rolls, and as you get higher in level, these modifiers (and sometimes the number of dice you can roll) will increase. 

The bonds that you develop with your Companions can become so strong that they can be persuaded to follow you even if your path does not align with their beliefs.
